What it's like to work with a health coach

Before I became a health coach, I worked with one for a full year, in two 6-month programs.

She was in a similar position that I am now, brining on her first few clients, just getting started. I was at a point in my life where I was ready to really take control of some of my own health goals and I knew working with a coach alongside me would help me get there. 

In the beginning, I set weight loss goals, eat-more-good-stuff goals, TRY-more-new-stuff goals, and financial/career related goals that were really challenging but so rewarding when I was able to cross them off. 

We dug deep into some of my own limiting beliefs around money, sex, faith, family, and authenticity. To go through that with the compassion, support, and guidance of a real life health coach - I can’t say enough about how much that helped me kickstart a real deep dive into some of my stickier inner spots. 

But like, how did we ACTUALLY work together?

We had an initial session where I set short and long-term goals. We outlined what our 6-months would look like, how she coaches, and what I could expect to get out of the work I was committing to do.

She made it clear that I had to commit to doing the work, that she would be there to guide, listen, hold accountable, and provide resources and professional insight, but that I was the one who'd be doing the work here.

This is a crucial piece, and I believe is the reason why this type of change is so impactful and is sustainable -- because we chooseto take the actions we need to in order to move ourselves forward.

We met every two weeks (sometimes in person since we're both local to Portland, sometimes on the phone) for 6-months, and then lather, rinse, repeat, and do it again for another 6-months because momentum!

When I had specific questions or curiosities about certain dietary theories (should I do a Whole30Cut gluten?), she asked thoughtful questions about the answers I was actually trying to get from those changes and helped me develop a realistic and sustainable plan for implementing whatever I wanted to experiment with. 

I was held accountable for the actions I promised to take, and over the course of a year, I made some serious, tangible, and sustainable progress!

I committed to Orange Theory Fitness (still love it) and I lost weight (15 pounds), I developed an even deeper love for fresh fruits and veggies and learned new ways to incorporate those into my life, my credit score went up by about 40 points because of the work I was doing to rebuild my financial stability (and she gave me some really creative and interesting tools to help with this goal!), and I got really clear on what I wanted out of my work life and helped me professionally navigate some tough negotiations that eventually lead to me to the pursuit of a better fit.

All of these skills (healthy cooking, standing up for myself, confronting my limiting beliefs, and my most significant financial successes in years) were really made possible by my decision to work one-on-one with a health coach who was trained to actively listen beyond the surface value of the words I was saying, to ask questions that really prompted a thoughtful response, and hold me accountable with realistic and sustainable goals throughout the entire program.

Nearly two years since we finished my second program, I’m so excited to be making my own moves into that same work. I've held a Yoga Teacher Certification since 2009, and YEARS ago, I looked into Life Coach programs.

I’ve always known I wanted to and felt called to help people live bigger and better than they could imagine. We’re made for so much more than average and fine and settling.We’re made for thriving and joy and a lot of really big & bold moves. I know this in my bones and I live for helping people find that truth and confidence in themselves.
